Abstract
1,079,857. Hydrostatic transmission control. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. June 1, 1964], May 31, 1963], No. 21838/63. Headings F2C and F2D. The angularity of the swash-plate 14 of a variable-capacity pump 18 feeding a fixedcapacity swash-plate motor driving a winch used, e.g., for docking a ship, is automatically adjusted by pressure of the working liquid so that both the ratio and direction of liquid flow through the motor can be varied to maintain constant working pressure. Pump swash-plate angle is controlled by a transverse piston 17 loaded on its upper face by pump delivery pressure 19, and on its larger lower face by a spring 18 and pump delivery pressure 19 reaching it through a restrictor 26, communicating also with a spill port 25, controlled through an adjustably spring-loaded lever 24, actuated by a piston 23 loaded by pump delivery pressure 19, any change in which thus varies the spill port opening and hence the rate of flow through the restrictor 26. This disturbs the pressure-balance on the ends of the piston 17 which then moves the swash-plate 14 to restore constant delivery pressure. Should excessive load on the winch cable reverse the motor, the latter will then act as a pump, and the working pressure, acting through the piston 17, will move the pump swash-plate 14 over centre to rererse the flow direction, whereupon the pump,. acting as a brake, restores working pressure to its constant value, thus maintaining constant cable tension.
