Abstract

A drilling mud additive is prepared by solubilizing a lignite, for example leonardite, having a solubility in alkali in excess of 66.2/3% and an oxygen content in excess of 20% in a caustic solution and adding a soluble zinc salt to the solution. A typical additive comprises a colloidal zinc lignite complex containing 75.2% to 88.15% lignite, 5% to 7.5% sodium hydroxide, 5% to 7.5% potassium hydroxide and 1.85 to 9.8% zinc sulphate, all percentages being by weight. The complex may be used in conjunction with organic polyelectrolytes, for example lignosulphonates or bark extracts and polyphenolic compositions. Diesel oil emulsions are mentioned.
