[Also in Division G1] A phase sensitive demodulator for a balancing machine comprises a voltage divider formed by a fixed resistor 12 and a photo-resistor, preferably a pair of oppositely poled photo-diodes 13, 14. An alternating " unbalance " measuring voltage Ue, derived e.g. from a transducer responsive to vibrations of a bearing of the machine, is applied across the divider and the photo-resistors are illuminated by a source 16 periodically obturated at 17 at the frequency of rotation of the body under test (preferably during one half of each rotation of the body). The voltage across the photo-diodes after filtering at 18, 19 thus produces an output direct voltage Ua of magnitude and polarity corresponding to the magnitude x cos # and phase sense of the measuring voltage Ue relative to the phase # of the chopper action at 17.
