Abstract

1,079,341. Chain saws. BORG WARNER CORPORATION. April 22, 1965 [May 8, 1964], No. 17067/65. Heading B5L A chain saw bar comprises a centre spacer member 11 having a peripheral wear strip supporting surface 24, side plates 12 extending beyond the surface to form a groove 20 for receiving a saw chain 13, retaining means 25 carried by the member 11 adjacent the ends of the surface and having retaining surfaces 26 respectively forming acute angles (A) with the surface, and a resilient, normally straight, elongated symmetrical wear strip 15 having tapered ends each of which has a conical surface or opposite inclined surfaces 22 arranged symmetrically about the longitudinal centre line of the wear strip, one of said surfaces or a portion of the conical surface at each end complementally engaging a respective retaining surface to hold the wear strip in bowed arched relation with respect to the surface for resiliently and slidably supporting the saw chain. The peripheral surface is continuously arcuate and when one surface 21 of the strip is worn, the strip may be turned through 180 degrees to present the other surface 21 to the saw chain, the others of said surfaces 22 at the ends of the strip engaging the retaining surfaces 26. Two strips may be provided one on each surface of the spacer member. In an alternative embodiment, the wear strip is cylindrical with conical or dihedral tapered ends.
