Abstract
A copolymer of butene-1 and propylene that forms upon cooling from a melt, has a post-crystallization of less than 0.5 weight per cent as measured by the change in density over a 24-hour period in a density gradient column at a temperature of 23 DEG C. and a tensile modulus greater than 25,000 p.s.i., is made by copolymerizing a monomer mixture containing 91-95 mole per cent butene-1, and 9-5 mole per cent propylene at a temperature between 54 DEG C. and 66 DEG C., in the presence of a catalyst system comprising TiCl3, (C2H5)2AlI, and (C2H5)2AlCl. The mole per cent ratio of the organoaluminium chloride to the iodide is between 4:1 and 0.5:1, and the mole ratio of Al to Ti is between 3:1 and 6:1. The copolymerization is effected in bulk either batchwise or continuously.
