Abstract

Azo dyes capable of being metallized are obtained from a compound of the formula <FORM:1079257/C4-C5/1> where R is hydrogen, alkyl (which may be substituted by alkoxy, carbalkoxy or halogen), cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl (which may be substituted by alkoxy or halogen) or arylsulphonyl, and R1 is hydrogen, aralkoxy or aryl (see Division C2) by diazotizing it with NaNO2, coupling the diazonium salt with, e.g. 2-naphthol, and metallizing with a heavy metal salt such as iron chloride. The products are wool dyes.ALSO:The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1079257/C2/1> where R is hydrogen, alkyl (which may be substituted by alkoxy, carbalkoxy or halogen), cycloalkyl, aralkyl, aryl (which may be substituted by alkoxy or halogen) or arylsulphonyl, and R1 is hydrogen, aralkoxy or aryl; and their production by catalytic reduction of the corresponding nitro compounds or an alkali metal salt thereof in the presence of a solvent. In examples, R and R1 are respectively (1)-(3) Ph, H (and its Ni salt); (4) Me, H (and its hydrochloride); (5) H, H (and its hydrochloride); (6) benzyl, benzyloxy; (7) m-chlorophenyl, H; (8) Me, Ph; (9) p-toluenesulphonyl, H; (10) cyclohexyl, H; (11) p-methoxyphenyl, H; (12) 1-carbethoxyethyl, H; (13) and (14) Ph, H.
