Abstract
1,079,192. Rear axle suspensions. ADAM OPEL A.G. June 27, 1966 [July 10, 1965], No. 28614/66. Heading B7D. A suspension system resiliently interconnecting the rear wheels to the superstructure of a motor vehicle comprises a pair of selflevelling telescopic supplementary air springs 28 connected in parallel with the main springs, and a pair of shock absorbers 35 arranged separately from the air springs 28. As shown applied to a rigid rear axle, the air springs 28 are arranged coaxially within helical main springs 27. Control arms 14 clamped to each axle tube 12 and pivoted on the superstructure by resilient bushings 15, each carry a bracket 26 which engages the corresponding helical spring 27 and supports a rubber pad 45 abutting the piston of the air spring 28. Hat-shaped inserts 50 in the frame side members 16 bear on the respective helical and air springs 27, 28 through rubber elements 46, 55. A panhard rod (not shown) provides lateral location for the axle. Longitudinal leafsprings may replace the helical main springs, the control arms 14 being omitted.
