Abstract

1,079,077. Wells &c. A. F. STANONIS. Aug. 18, 1965, No. 35449/65. Heading E1F. In a method of preventing salt water breaking through to contact fluid produced from a well, a lense shaped mass of control fluid 17 which is electrically conductive and lighter than salt water is formed above and in contact with the salt water 12, an electrode 15 having the polarality the same as the natural charge of the surrounding earth is inserted in the well to extend to a position above the fluid 17, an electrode 16 of opposite polarality to the electrode 15 is inserted in the well to extend below the electrode 15, and the electrodes are connected to a source of electric power. In the well shown the control fluid is water and the fluid produced is oil. The invention may be applied to an oil field having a plurality of wells, electrodes 15 and control water being located in some of the wells and electrodes 16 being located in others of the wells; to oil wells having an oil-water zone between the oil and water, or to a fresh water well the fresh water forming the control fluid. The wells may be cased with plastics or have metal casings with plastics inserts. In wells deeper than 1500ft A.C. current is applied to a rectifier at the bottom of the well to form the source of electric power.
