Abstract
Textile materials containing wool alone or in admixture with other fibrous materials, e.g. cotton regenerated cellulose, linen and polyester fibres, are shrinkproofed by impregnating them with a solution containing a polyfunctional amidoaziridine compound and an acyclic polyamine containing at least five amino groups per molecule drying them and effecting or completing reaction of the applied compounds by a subsequent heating step. The polyfunctional aziridine compound may have the formula <FORM:1078747/D1-D2/1> in which R1, R2 and R3 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups containing 1-4 carbon atoms, n is 2 or 3 and Q is an organic or inorganic group, and may be a phosphoramide, carboxamide, carbamate, substituted urea or sulphonamide. The polyamine may be a polyalkylene polyamine containing the repeating unit. <FORM:1078747/D1-D2/2> in which R4 is a hydrogen atom or alkyl group and m has a value of 2-6, or polyamino polyalkylene oxide containing the repeating unit <FORM:1078747/D1-D2/3> in which R4 and m are as defined above and b is an integer of 1-20. The weight ratio of polyaziridine compound to acyclic polyamine in the reaction mixture may be within the range 1:9 to 9:1. The polyaziridine and acyclic polyamine may be applied to the textile materials as a solution containing 1-10% by weight of the mixture based on the weight of the materials being treated in water or an organic solvent and having a pH of 6-7 by spraying, dipping or padding, excess solution removed by squeezing or centrifuging and the treated materials then dried and heated to 250 DEG -350 DEG F for 1-10 mins. The materials may also be rendered water and oil repellent by incorporating into the treating solution a fluoro organic compound, e.g. a polyfluoroalkylacrylate. The materials may be dyed with pre-metallized and acid dyes prior to or after the treatment.
