Abstract

A solid photochromic material comprises a polymeric base containing at least one photochromic material with a polynuclear conjugated condensed aromatic ring system, which is excitable by photons of energy greater than that equivalent to a wavelength of 6000 <\>rA to a meta-stable state, the meta-stable state having strongly-allowed triplet-triplet transitions to higher-energy states, the energy gaps of these transitions corresponding to wavelengths of 41,000-7,500 <\>rA. The triplet state is defined as that of a molecule containing two unpaired electrons with parallel spins. Two photochromic materials may be used, giving a synergistic effect. The material may be used as the middle layer in a filter with glass filters respectively opaque to I.-N. and U.-V. on each side, and the glass layers may be sealed to prevent ingress of oxygen to the photochromic material. 25 examples are given, together with a large number of applications. Photochromic materials mentioned include pyrazine, benzamide, 2-bromo-naphthalene, naphthalene, 1,10-phenantaroline, thianthrene, biphenyl, fluorene, benzophenone, benzophenone oxime, anthracene, triphenylene and chrysene, and may contain phosphorus or arsenic. Numerous polymeric base materials are mentioned, which should be substantially free from monomer and active centres capable of reacting with free radicals and bi-radicals, and free of oxygen.
