Abstract

1:1:1:2:2 - Pentafluoro - 3 - bromo - 3 - chloropropane and preparation thereof by halogenation of 1:1:1:2:2 - pentafluoro - 3 - chloropropane or 1:1:1:2:2-pentafluoro-3-bromopropane with bromine or chlorine respectively. The halogenation may be carried out either by heating the reactants preferably in the vapour phase at a temperature in the range 300-600 DEG C., optionally in the presence of a gaseous diluent or by carrying out the reaction in the liquid or vapour phase in the presence of ultra-violet light.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions suitable for administration by inhalation to produce anaesthesia comprise 1:1:1:2:2-pentafluoro-3-bromo-3-chloro-propane, optionally in association with pharmaceutically acceptable stabilisers, pre-mixed or mixed in situ with oxygen or air and, if desired, containing one or more known anaesthetic(s), e.g. ether, chloroform, nitrous oxide, ethylene, trichloroethylene, cyclopropane, halothane, divinyl ether, tri-fluoroethyl-vinyl ether or methoxyflurane. The production of anaesthesia in animals excluding man by administration of such compositions in sufficient amount to produce anaesthesia whilst maintaining adequate respiration is also claimed.
