Abstract

The invention comprises dyestuffs of the general formula <FORM:1078319/C4-C5/1> wherein F is a radical derived from an organic dyestuff, R is H or an alkyl, aralkyl or aryl radical, R1 and R2 are alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, or R1 and R2 together with the N atom form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic N-containing ring, R3 is alkyl or aralkyl, m is a whole number, and X is an anion. They may be obtained by reacting dyestuffs which contain at least one group of the formula -CR=N-NR1R2 with a quaternizing agent. The quaternizing reaction is preferably carried out in an organic medium. Specified quaternizing agents are alkyl halides, dialkyl sulphates, aromatic sulphonic acid esters and benzyl halides. Specified dyestuff residues F are metal-free or metal-containing mono- or poly-azo-dyestuffs, metal-free or metal-containing azaporphin dyestuffs, preferably copper or nickel phthalocyanine dyestuffs, anthraquinone dyestuffs including those containing more than 3 anellated (fused) rings, oxazine, dioxazine, nitro, diphenylamine, di- and tri-phenyl-methane dyestuffs, naphtholactam condensation dyestuffs and dyestuffs based on naphthoquinone and on naphthoquinonimine. Preferred dyestuffs are free from anionically solubilizing groups, i.e. sulphonic acid, carboxylic acid and disulphimide groups. The quaternary hydrazonium group is linked to the dyestuff molecule either directly or via a bridge member. Examples are given for the production of mono- and dis-azo dyestuffs, and anthraquinone dyestuffs containing a quaternary hydrazonium group. Dyestuffs which are free from SO3H and COOH groups are suitable for dyeing polyacrylonitrile materials and aromatic polyesters. The dyestuffs may also be used for dyeing superpolyamides. The starting dyestuffs may be prepared by condensing dyestuffs which contain, linked directly or via a bridge member, at least one group -C(R) = O with asymmetric hydrazines of the formula H2N-NR1R2.ALSO:Hydrophobic fibre materials are dyed with dyes of the formula:- <FORM:1078319/D1-D2/1> wherein F represents a radical derived from an organic dyestuff, R represents H, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl, R1 and R2 represent alkyl, aralkyl or aryl or R1 and R2 and the N atom form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic N-containing ring, R3 represent alkyl or aralkyl, m is a whole number and X is an anion. Specified fibre materials are aromatic polyesters, triacetates, 2 1/2 acetates, acrylonitrile polymers and copolymers, synthetic superpolyamides and superpolyurethanes, and polypropylene. Examples are given in which the above fibres are dyed.
