Abstract

Tablets are coated by spraying with a melt comprising 60-90% by wt. polyethylene glycol of average M.W. 1000-9000 and 10-40% by wt. of a non-toxic synthetic or natural resin or gum or sucrose benzoate, or mixtures thereof, miscible in a molten state with the polyethylene glycol at 45-200 DEG C. Specified resins and gums include shellac, gum sandarac, mastic, copal, dammar, lignin, rosin, modified resins, e.g. the glycerol, pentaerythritol, and ethylene glycol esters of rosin or hydrogenated resins, and rosin modified maleates, alkyd resins, polyvinyl alcohols, polyvinyl pyrrolidones, polyacrylamides, polyacrylates, polyethylene oxides, chitin, larch arabogalactan, dextrans, starch amylose, starch amylopectin. Dyes, pigments, and plasticisers, e.g. cetyl alcohols, castor oil, polyethylene glycols having an average M.W. below 1000, sucrose acetate isobutyrate may be added to the melt.
