Abstract

1.077.530. Tunnelling shields. PHILIPP HOLZMANN A.G. Jan. 5, 1966, No. 563/66. Heading E1F. In a tunnelling shield a flexible sealing tube of plastics is housed concertinawise within an annular chamber at the rear periphery of the shield, the tube being sealable to the shield at one or the other ends of the chamber in accordance with operating conditions by radially expandable clamping rings. The tube leaves the rear of the chamber through an annular slit to emerge from the shield to be anchored against to make a watertight seal with the exterior of lubbing rings of the permanent tunnel lining erected to the rear of the shield to form a water impervious barrier between the shield and the lining. When the shield is advancing the tube is clamped to the shield by the forward clamping ring and by the rearward clamping ring when a new supply of tubing is to be joined in the chamber to payed out tubing.
