Abstract

N,N1 - Disubstituted - 1,11,4,41 tetrahydro - 4,41-bipyridyls are prepared by the interaction of a solution of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in a substantially anhydrous solvent containing ammonia with a quaternary pyridinium salt. The bipyridyls so prepared may be oxidized to bipyridylium salts by, for example, the methods described in Specifications 1,073,081 and 1,077,366.
