Abstract

A synthetic lubricating oil is obtained by polymerizing a C6-C12 straight chain alpha olefin in the absence of any added solvent as reaction medium at 0-50 DEG C. in presence of a catalyst formed from (1) an aluminium alkyl sesquichloride, the alkyl group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, (2) titanium tetrachloride, (3) a C1-C20 alkyl methyl ether or an oxirane of the formula <FORM:1077302/C4-C5/1> wherein R is hydrogen or a C1-C20 alkyl group and (4) a diene capable of forming a complex with a metal component of the catalyst system, the amounts of catalyst components being such that the atomic ratio Al : Ti is between 0.8-2.5; the atomic ratio O : Al is between 0.4-0.8 and the amount of diene used being 0.1-3.0 moles per mole of titanium. The examples describe polymerization of octene-1 using as the diene component of the catalyst system, isoprene, norbornadiene or limonene, the product being vacuum distilled to remove dimer, and leave a residuum boiling above 650 DEG F. at atmospheric pressure, which is the required lube oil.ALSO:Polymerisation catalysts are formed from (1) an aluminium alkyl sesquichloride the alkyl group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, (2) titanium tetrachloride, (3) a C1-C20 alkyl methyl ether or a compound having the general formula <FORM:1077302/B1-B2/1> wherein R is a C1-C20 alkyl group, and (4) a diene capable of forming a complex with a metal of the catalyst, the proportions of the catalyst components being such that the atomic ratio Al:Ti is between 0.8 to 2.5 and the atomic ratio O:Al is 0.4 to 0.8.
