1,077,284. Boring earth; wells; offshore operating vessels. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. Oct. 19, 1965, No. 44242/65. Headings E1F and E1H. Maintenance or other operations are carried out on a sub-aqueous well (not shown) through a pipe 8 secured at its lower end to the well and connected at its upper end to a platform 5 movably mounted on a floating vessel 4 and arranged so that an upwardly directed force may be applied to the platform to keep the pipe in tension. The platform is supported by weights 11, the pipe being gripped by clamps 7 on the platform and passing through a hole 9 in the vessel. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), the platform is supported on hydraulic jacks and carries a drilling rig. The tension of the pipe is detected by sensing devices connected to the jacks, and the deviation of the platform from a desired horizontal plane is detected by a sensing device mounted on the platform, signals from the devices being directed to a controller operating valves supplying oil to the jacks. In a further modification in which each jack maintains a constant load, each jack is connected to a relatively large gas filled pressure tank. The pipe may be replaced by parallel or concentric pipes.
