Abstract

Organic compounds containing the imido chloride grouping <FORM:1077216/C2/1> are prepared by contacting with chlorine in the gas phase at a temperature from 200 DEG to 500 DEG C. a carbamic acid chloride of the formula <FORM:1077216/C2/2> wherein R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or chloroalkyl group, R2 and R3 represent H or Cl, R4 represents an alkyl, chloroalkyl or aryl group or R1 and R4 may form, together with the C-atom and the N-atom a heterocyclic ring system, and recovering the formed imido chloride compound from the chlorination mixture. In a modification of the process the carbamic acid chloride is initially contacted with chlorine at a temperature from 50-150 DEG C. and the resulting chlorinated carbamic acid chloride is further contacted with chlorine in the gas phase at a temperature from 200-500 DEG C. The chlorination may be performed in the presence of a catalyst.
