Abstract
1,077,043. Locating the surface of a liquid. TRANS-SONICS Inc. June 24, 1964 [June 26, 1963], No. 26199/64. Heading G4H. Apparatus for locating the surface of a liquid comprises thermo-electric junctions or thermistors arranged at different depths in the liquid so that the net thermo-electric voltage developed alternates between first and second voltages as the level of the liquid rises or descends. In one embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) the thermoelectric potentials of successive junctions are of opposite polarity so that when none of the junctions are covered by liquid a zero output is obtained, when one of the junctions is covered, the output voltage rises and when two junctions are covered and the output voltage again drops to zero. The junctions are preferably heated since the liquid removes heat from an immersed junction more rapidly than the atmosphere above the liquid removes heat from a non- immersed junction. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 a plurality of stacks of thermo-electric junctions 50, 52, 54, 56 formed from two metals A, B are arranged so that the outputs from the stacks give a Gray code representation of the level of the liquid. The outputs are connected to quantizers 76 which may be for example Schmitt triggers to give a " 1 " output when the input voltage is above a certain level and a " O " output when the voltage falls below this level. The quantizers are also fed with biasing voltages to allow for the variation in heating current fed to the stacks from a transformer 22. The outputs from the quantizers are fed to a Gray's binary to pure binary converter and also to an analogue converter the output of which is indicated by a meter 80.
