Abstract
Alpha glyceryl ethers are extracted from a marine oil source by alcoholysing such oil with a C1- 3 aliphatic alcohol, dissolving the alcoholysis product in a substantially non-polar solvent, contacting this solution with a polar solvent which is substantially immiscible with the nonpolar solvent so as to form two phases, recovering from the polar solvent phase an extract containing free hydroxylic alpha glyceryl ethers, saponifying the saponifiable matter of this extract, and recovering the alpha glyceryl ethers from the resulting soap by solvent extraction. These ethers have the formula CH2OH.CHOH.CH2OR, where R is a high alkenyl or alkyl, straight chained radical, e.g. oleyl, palmityl, palmitoleyl or stearyl. Suitable marine oils are dogfish and catfish liver oils. The non-polar solvent may be a hydrocarbon or a non-volatile edible glyceride oil; e.g. fish oil. The polar solvent may be aqueous methanol, containing 5-10% water. Saponification is suitably effected using KOH, and the solvent for extraction may be CH2Cl2. In the extraction stage a small quantity of phosphates may be present, e.g. NaH2PO4; Na2HPO4 and Na tripolyphosphate. The alpha glyceryl ethers may be removed from the solvent by fractional distillation or crystallization. Viiamin A present in the marine oil source may be removed by solvent extraction with CH2CL2 after removing the alpha glyceryl ethers, or before their removal, by molecular distillation.
