Abstract

107,636. Sandford, W. H. July 4, 1916. Coupling.-Relates to couplings for ropes, chains, &c. of the kind in which the rope &c. is gripped between a sheath and a sliding wedge round which the rope is passed. According to the invention, the wedge is locked in gripping position by a bolt and nut, the bolt acting also as a guide for the wedge. As shown in Fig. 2, the bolt H passes through longitudinal slots J in the sheath and through a short transverse slot K in the wedge. To facilitate the insertion of the rope, a hole L is provided in the wedge, so that the wedge may be held in the retracted position by inserting a spike through the slots J and the hole L. Two wedges may be fitted in one sheath to form a coupling for two ropes. One of the flat sides of the sheath may be omitted to facilitate the passing of the rope round the wedge. The rope may be passed round the wedge more than once: or the end of the rope may be secured in a hole in the wedge by a set-screw. In a modification, the throat a of the sheath is divided into two passages, one of which is provided with a setscrew to grip the end of the rope. In a further modification, the longitudinal slot is provided in the wedge, and the transverse slots in the sheath.
