Abstract

107,635. Matthews, C. A. July 4, 1916. Buffers.-In a self-contained buffer, the front portion of the inside of the shell A has concentric protuberances A<6>, Figs. 3 and 4, while similar protuberances B<3> are formed on the outside of the inner end of the plunger B, so as to allow this plunger to be inserted endways from the front into the shell, and be turned until all the protuberances are in alinement. Members C, Figs. 12 and 13, placed in position from the back of the shell A fill the concentric spaces between the protuberances A<6> and form guides for the rear end of the plunger; they are secured by passing their tongues C<1> through slits in the base-plate D. The plunger is formed with an integral or attached head B<2> which may carry a spigot for guiding one end of a volute spring when used. As shown, an ordinary coiled spring F is employed and the base-plate D may be dished when a long spring is required. Means are described for securing such dished plates to single or double frame members of vehicles.
