Abstract
1,076,214. Selective printing. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. June 15, 1965 [June 19, 1964], No. 25183/65. Heading B6F. Type-wheel machines; printing of marks in selected positions; index setting arrangements; type-wheels; type-setting devices; impression arrangements.-A marking device for printing in selected positions of marks representative of numerical characters on students' scoring sheets and which are adapted for scanning by an optical apparatus comprises a marking cylinder 19, Fig. 3, provided with marking heads 20, 21 mounted diametrally opposite on the cylinder and adapted to be driven continuously by the printing machine which prints the scoring sheets. Each marking head comprises five rows of ten automatically displaced print bars 29 and two rows of ten manually settable print bars 30. The print bars 29 are displaced for impression by cam-shafts 35 ... 39, each having a cam 40 which displaces a respective push-rod 34, which in turn moves the associated print bar 29 against a resilient matrix 33 to impress a bar-like mark on the score sheet 25 advanced between the marking cylinder 19 and impression cylinder 22. The print bars are reset on rotation of the cams 40 from the push-rod engaging position by the resilient matrices 33. Power-assisted type Selection.-The marks printed are representative of student's allotted number and are printed in consecutively increasing or decreasing order. The print bars 29 are associated with the driving cam-shafts 35...39, which are associated with units, tens . - . and ten thousands decades and are driven cyclically from the printing machine to rotate the shafts accordingly, through Geneva gearing, Fig. 4. The shaft 35, which is rotated through one-tenth of a revolution is provided with a gear 58 having ten teeth, which meshes with a like gear 47, Fig. 5, fixed to a ratchetwheel 46, which is indexed one tooth space by a pawl 49 mounted on a pivotal plate 48 which is attached to the marking cylinder 19. The pivotal plate 48 has a cam-follower 53, which rides in an eccentric groove 54, Fig. 6, of a split cam 55 attached to a fixed shaft 56, whereby for each revolution of the marking cylinder the cam-follower 53 rocks the pawl to- and-fro to index the ratchet wheel 46. The rocking of pawl 49 can be disabled by adjustment of the cam 55 about the shaft 56. The order of the number which is printed by the marks is adjusted selectively by numeral indicating knobs 79, Fig. 2, so that the camshafts 35-39 can be manually set at a predetermined number. The cam-shafts are slidably mounted in the side plates and provided with grooves 81, 82, Fig. 4, which are engaged in the operative and inoperative position, respectively, by a slidable locking-bar 80.
