Abstract

Woven or knitted fabrics capable of absorbing water at ambient temperature in an amount of not less than 90% of the weight of the dry fabric are waterproofed by coating at least one surface of the fabric with a first synthetic resinous material, the liquid absorptive power of the fabric being reduced by a preliminary treatment in which the fabric is impregnated with a second synthetic resinous material having an affinity for the first synthetic resinous material in an amount such that there is present in the dry preliminarily treated fabric 0.8 to 4% of the second synthetic resinous material whilst the softness and feel of the fabric are not affected. The fabric may be made of natural fibres, or of a mixture of natural and synthetic fibres. In the examples, fabrics of cotton fibres, and mixed cotton and polyester fibres with plain weave are used. The second synthetic resinous material may have a linear or two-dimensional structure and may be acrylic, vinyl, urea, melamine resins. The first synthetic resinous material may be resinous material capable of further polymerisation to form a three dimensional structure and may be an acrylic, or modified acrylic, polyurethane, or polyester resin. The two resinous materials may interact such that one is a plasticizer for the other to make say the coating more flexible. A repelling component e.g. a silicone, may be added to the second synthetic resinous material to attain a predetermined equilibrium condition between the receptivity and repellency of the fabric towards the resinous material subsequently used to coat the fabric. It is thus possible to control and restrict the absorbing power toward the resinous material in the coating. The preliminary treatment may be carried out by impregnating with a dilute solution of the resin e.g. acrylic resin in ethyl acetate, and then removing the solvent. The impregnation may be carried out in vats or baths, or by spraying. The repellent material may be added simultaneously as a solution in say hexane. The coating may be applied by say blade-spreading, calendering, spraying, casting. The coating may then be dried to remove solvent and promote further polymerization. Multiple coatings may be applied with or without intermediate drying. Finishing coats may be applied, e.g. a silicone coating, on one or both sides of the fabric.
