A foaming composition for temporarily protecting a material from high temperatures, e.g. a welding flame, comprises a solid component and a liquid component which foam when mixed. The liquid component comprises water, polyvinylpyrrolidone and an acid salt and the solid component comprises substances which reacts with the acid salt to produce CO2, e.g. NaHCO3/K2CO3 mixture, and a starch-protein material.
