In the web winding apparatus of Specification 975,572, predetermined lengths of web are wound, and are provided near the end of each web with an end marking which indicates to the user in good time that the web-roll will shortly be exhausted when being used in a machine such as a graphic recorder. The present invention relates to a marking device capable of being used in combination with the web winding apparatus of Specifiction 975,572. The device includes two parallel guide rods 1 and 2, Fig. 1, connected together by means of cross-pieces 3 and 4. Cross-piece 4 is mounted to the housing 5 of the web winding apparatus, the table 22 and guide roller 24 forming part thereof, the mounting being such as to allow the cross-piece 4 to pivot so that the guide rods are elevated from the table 22 under the action of an electromagnet 6. The web of paper 23 passes over the table 22 and roller 24 and beneath the marking device. A triangular carriage 7 for the marking element such as a pencil, has three rollers 9, 10 and 11 at the apexes, Fig. 3, which rollers engage the parallel rods 1 and 2. Attached to the carriage is a holder 12 and a ring 13 through which the pencil may be passed and locked in position. Located beneath the carriage is a peg (14, Fig. 4), which has a recess (15) for the locating wheel (16) carried on a pin (17). The peg (14) and therefore the wheel (16), is adjustable obliquely with respect to the carriage or direction of movement of the web, with the aid of an adjusting screw (18). When the marking device is tilted downwards against the web 23, with carriage 7 in the position shown in Fig. 1, the web is nipped between the guide roller 24 and the wheel (16), thereby driving the wheel. Due to its oblique positioning, the wheel (16) drives the carriage 7 along the guide rods 1 and 2, and a line is drawn obliquely across the web with the pencil. When the carriage reaches the stop 20, a switch is actuated to operate the electromagnet 6 which tilts the rods upwards. The carriage then moves back along the guide rods under its own weight as far as the second stop, where it is again in position ready for use. As an alternative arrangement, the guide rods 1 and 2 are supported in a yoke which is supported in balance fashion from a central point, Fig. 5 (not shown). With one end of the yoke fixed and the central point raised by an arm with an electromagnet, the guide rods are tilted in a similar manner as above. The marking pencil need not be attached to the carriage but may be adjustably attached to one of the guide rods so that as the carriage moves along the guide rails, a pencil line is drawn on the web parallel to the direction of movement of the web.
