A device for classifying objects (e.g. stockings) comprises sensing elements sensing the object and connected via coding circuits to a main register which feeds comparison circuitry to select a location for the object. A counter scans the sensing elements (4), those energized actuating coders (18) to set corresponding sections of a main register (20), the contents of which are compared (22) with those of auxiliary registers (21) corresponding to respective collection locations (7). The object is drawn by suction to the location whose comparator indicates equality, being deposited in the location when the object actuates a microswitch. Each auxiliary register stores a number representing the dimensions of objects in its location, and communicates with the main register for initially receiving this number, since when no comparison indicates equality the object is passed to the first empty location and the member from the main register placed in the corresponding auxiliary register.
