Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the lowering of the recognizing capacity due to an incorrect order of writing strokes or an erroneous number of strokes without increasing the memory capacity, by dividing each stroke into an optional number of segments and approximating these divided segments to each other at a feature point of stroke of a standard pattern. CONSTITUTION:A segment dividing device 2 receives a number N of divisions of a segment number storage device 3 that gives an indication for the number of divided segments of each stroke of an input character and divides the signal 101 and the stroke of each input character into N units of segments. A pattern matching device 7 calculates the distance between strokes between the standard pattern of a picture S and the input character having R units of segments. Then the segment that has the shortest distance between strokes is decided for each stroke of the standard pattern. The total sum of the inter-stroke distances is divided by the stroke number (n) of the input character and the stroke number N of the standard pattern to obtain the distance between the input character and the standard pattern. This value of distance is delivered to a discriminating device 10.
