Abstract

Decalin, predominantly in the cis form, is produced by hydrogenating either tetralin alone or a solution of naphthalene in cis-decalin or tetralin with hydrogen in the presence of a rhodium catalyst. The catalyst is preferably finely divided rhodium metal supported on a conventional carrier, preferably carbon. The product may be recovered by filtering off the catalyst, and optionally further purified by conventional means, e.g. fractional distillation. Part of the cis-decalin product may be recycled for use as solvent. Preferably the hydrogenation process is preceded by a pretreatment of the tetralin or solution of naphthalene by stirring with a desulphurization or hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. Pt, Pd, Co, Ni or Fe, on a conventional support.
