Abstract
1,074,151. Acoustic delay lines. FRIDEN Inc. July 8, 1964 [Oct. 28, 1963], No. 28170/64. Heading H3U. A delay line includes a spirally coiled wire 10, e.g. of nickel-iron alloy, connected at its ends to magneto-strictive transducers and supported between its ends by twelve pads 22. Each pad has a faineant surface engaging. the wire, this surface being provided by a striate material, this material either constituting the pad as a whole or a surface layer on the pad. Thus the pads do not affect the transmission of an elastic torsional wave along the wire. Each transducer comprises two magnetostrictive ribbons 12 welded to the wire 10 at diametrically opposite points of its cylindrical surface, the ribbons extending through coils 14 to a rubbor clamp 18 and being biased by a magnet 20. A signal applied to the coils at one end of the wire causes one ribbon 12 to expand and the other to contract whereby a torsional wave is transmitted along the wire to the other transducer. Alternate pads 22 are fastened to the base 8 and lie under the wire, the other being supported over the wire by bars 24 adjustable by screws 26. The pads 22 may have a flat surface or be grooved as in Fig. 2 and may consist of balsa wood or glass fibrous filaments, the striµ of the wood or glass lying parallel to the direction of the wire 10.
