A metal barrel comprising a central band 1, Fig. 4, not shown, and two end shells 3 welded thereto, includes a bung receiving assembly centrally located in the band and consisting of a bung receiving sleeve 10 welded to an opening in the band and surrounded by an annular stiffening member 19 which rests on the band and is enclosed by a plate 14 welded to the band and to the turned back edge 17 of the sleeve. The assembly is located between two ribs 2, and the area around the barrel opening is flattened to the shape indicated in Fig. 4, with grooves 9, corresponding in position with the ribs 2, which receive projections 20 depending from the stiffening member 19. Instead of grooves 9, which absorb the metal of the barrel displaced during the shaping operation, a depression 21, Fig. 8, not shown, is provided at the location of the barrel opening which is removed when the opening is made.
