Abstract

1,073,317. Carton erecting machines. D. WAINBERG. June 12, 1964, No. 24507/64. Heading B5D. [Also in Division B8] A machine for the erection of a carton of the type shown in Fig. 21 (i.e. having tongues 80 and locking tabs 81 engaged in slits in the end walls) comprises die and plunger means, blank feeding means and an auxiliary unit situated beneath the die plate which folds down flanges and/or a lid on the carton. The plunger has projections 91 which deflect outwardly part of each end wall to cause the slits 84 in those walls to open, the die being recessed to correspond. The die also has recesses 139, 140 which engage and fold up the tabs 81 against the tongues 80. The tabs 81 spring away from the tongues 80 to prevent unfolding of the carton. The machine is driven by a motor 38 which rotates a wheel 41 carrying an eccentrically mounted link 43. The link oscillates a pair of rods 46 which by means of links 56, 53 cause operation of the blank transfer mechanism and movement of the plunger respectively, the latter being mounted on a crosshead 55 and sliding on rods 63. The auxiliary unit is actuated by a linkage 180- 185 connected to one of the pair of oscillating rods 46. The links 185 are connected to sleeves 188 sliding on the rods 63 and support a further linkage terminating in members 194, 195 which engage and fold down a lid and/or flanges on the carton. The die and magazine are formed as a unit (Fig. 13) whereby adjustment between these units and the plunger is obviated. If a deep carton is being formed supporting means is provided beneath the die. This means (Fig. 26) comprises horizontal bars (175) supported on members (174) pivotally connected to the underside of the die. A toggle join (176), and a tension spring (179) provide means for moving the bars (175) outwardly to allow a completed carton to be ejected. The toggle may be operated from the plunger operating mechanism.
