Abstract
Fibres of improved dyeability are made by melt spinning a composition of (a) a polyester, (b) a polyalkylene oxide of molecular weight such that it is insoluble in the polyester (e.g. M.W. 6000 to 20,000) and (c) either an amine of formula <FORM:1073067/C3/1> where R, R1 and R11 are alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl or cycloalkyl groups or an imidazole of formula <FORM:1073067/C3/2> or <FORM:1073067/C3/3> where Ph is a phenyl radical, R111 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aralkyl, alkaryl, aryl or cycloalkyl radical and R1111 is an alkylene, arylene or aralkylene radical. The compound (b) is present in an amount of 5-15% by weight of the total mixture and the compound (c) is present in an amount corresponding to a basic nitrogen content in the total mixture of 0.1-0.8% by weight. The composition may also include (d) an antioxidant, e.g. 2:21-dihydroxy-3:31 - bis(a - methyl - cyclohexyl) - 5:51 - dimethyldiphenylmethane or (e) a dispersing agent, e.g. a polydimethylsiloxane-polyethyleneoxide block copolymer, an alkylphenol-ethylene oxide condensate or nylon 6. Specified polyesters are those of terephthalic or 1:2-diphenoxyethane -4:41-dicarboxylic acid and polymethylene glycols or bis-(1,4-hydroxymethyl)-cyclohexane which polyesters may be modified by sebacic or isophthalic acid. Preferably the particle size of the phase dispersed in the polyester fibres is 0.1 to 5 microns diameter.
