Abstract
1,072,524. Cyclone separators. DORROLIVER Inc. Nov. 14, 1963 [Nov. 14, 1962], No. 35799/63. Heading B2P. [Also in Division B3] A hydrocyclone, Fig. 3, comprises a hollow ceramic body 58 partly or wholly sheathed by a metallic shell 64 fused to the exterior surface of, and compressing, the body 58. The shell 64 is made of steel and is cast (see Division B3) around the body 58, e.g. of aluminium oxide, which is formed internally with a cylindrical section 60 into which a tangential inlet 66 opens, a tapering section 62 and a cylindrical discharge opening 70. The outer surface of the body 58 may be wholly cylindrical. A cap member 56 having a discharge opening 68 is held on to the top of the body 58 by a hollow tightening member 58 screwed above packing 78 into a retainer member 82 in turn screwed into an upper supporting plate 24 and sealed thereto by an O-ring 84. The hydrocyclone is similarly sealed to a lower supporting plate 24 by an O-ring 72. A number of such hydrocyclones 22, Fig. 2, are mounted in a separator between the plates 24 which together with an annular member 40 define a feed chamber 12 to which a liquid solid slurry is supplied through apertures 14 which communicate with the separator inlet pipe. The separated light fraction overflows from the hydrocyclones through the discharge openings 68 into the upper housing member 26 from which it overflows through outlet 28. The heavy fraction discharges through the openings 70 into the lower housing member 30 and is removed through outlet 32. The members 26, 40, 30 are tightened together by bolts and nuts 46, 50 and sealed by metallic O-rings 51, the assembly being supported by leg members 52. The separator may be employed to treat slurry at 150 p.s.i. and 1300F, the individual hydrocyclones being capable of withstanding pressures of up to 10,000 p.s.i. Catalyst-containing oil from catalytic crackers may be treated in the separator for the recovery of the catalyst.
