Abstract
1,071,982. Reactors. GESELLSCHAFT FUER KERNFORSOHUNG m.b.H. Feb. 16, 1965 [Feb. 25, 1964], No. 6552/65. Heading G6C. The fuel elements of a nuclear reactor are suspended, individually or as assemblies, from a support plate, the support plate having a common inlet opening for each of a number of groups of fuel elements; slots extend from each inlet opening to individual fuel element locations ; the fuel elements have recesses in their upper parts which correspond to the width of the slots. The fuel assemblies are thus packed closely whilst retaining adequate strength in the support plate. The invention is applicable to gas - cooled fast reactors using a downwards flow of gas into the core. Fig. 1 shows a portion of a support plate, which comprises identical top and bottom plates 1, 2, interconnected by side walls 3 to form a cellular structure in the complete plate. The fuel element or fuel assembly 10, Fig. 2, is supported by a member comprising two square section lengths 11, 12 and two larger circular sections 14, 15; these cross-sections are substantially smaller than the fuel element cross-section. Thus, in Fig. 1, each hole 5 large enough to receive the fuel element cross-section passes eight fuel elements through it to enter them in the core. Each fuel element is lowered until its square sections 11, 12 are engaged by the slots 6; the fuel element is transferred through the slots until it is correctly positioned, whereupon it is lowered so that circular stem portions 14, 15 engage the holes 7 in the plates 1, 2. In a modification, the double plates 1, 2 are replaced by a single top plate, and the bottoms of the fuel assemblies are steadied in a separate grid. In both cases, a fuel element having a modified shank is finally positioned in the large central hole of each group.
