Abstract

1,071,477. Making solder wire; rolling. G. LAUBMEYER, and M. SMITS. Dec. 3, 1964 [Dec. 4, 1963; Aug. 8, 1964; Nov. 10, 1964], No. 49115/64. Headings B3A, B3M and B3R. Solder wire has fine transverse holes spaced along the length of the wire with openings at the surface of the wire through which flux is exuded, there being at least 500 holes per metre of wire length. A hollow solder wire (1) Fig. 1 (not shown), with a core (3) of flux has radial holes (2) extending to the flux core, the holes increasing on cross-section towards the wire surface. The holes may be initially filled with flux. In a modification, a solid solder wire has holes increasing in cross-section towards the surface extending part way towards the centre of the wire, the holes being filled with flux. The holes may be equally or unequally spaced around the periphery and may be arranged parallel to the wire axis or on helical lines. The holes may be formed by passing the wire through pairs of grooved rolls (5, 6), Fig. 9 (not shown), having needle-like projections (10) in the grooves, the rolls being in series and angularly arranged. Each roll consists of two half-rolls enclosing a central groove within which is arranged a circular toothed saw having teeth at its periphery. During rolling of the wire, tallow, palm oil &c. is provided on the wire. If a solid wire has been passed through the rolls, the holes are filled with a volatile liquid, e.g. alcohol and then the wire is passed through a molten flux, e.g. rosin or synthetic resin bath which may be ultrasonically vibrated. The exposed flux in the openings may be coated with lacquer.
