Abstract

1,071,221. Frequency modulation systems; radio signalling. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Dec. 9, 1965 [Dec. 12, 1964]. No. 52285/65. Headings H3R and H4L. In a frequency modulation system, e.g. a repeater of a microwave transmission system, comprising a filter and a non-linear circuit element, the filter having a phase-frequency characteristic such as to produce amplitude modulation; an equalizer circuit is included between the filter and the non-linear circuit, and has an amplitude-frequency characteristic tending to oppose the amplitude modulation produced by the filter. In one example, Fig. 3 (not shown), the equalizer comprises a series tuned circuit (L1, C1, R1) and a parallel tuned circuit (L2, C2) coupled to the signal path through respective potentiometers (P1 and P2) which may be semi-conductors. An I.F. amplifier chain in a repeater may include a group-delay equalizer followed by an amplitudebroadener, which flattens out the amplitudefrequency characteristic of the I.F. amplifier, followed by the equalizer circuit described above which feeds an amplitude limiter followed by the last stage of the I.F. amplifier. The amplitude limiter would convert any amplitude modulation into phase modulation, but the former is eliminated by the equalizer circuit.
