Abstract

Monoepoxides and polyepoxides are reacted with compounds containing one or more hydroxyl, mercapto, carboxyl and/or carboxylic anhydride groups in the molecule in the presence of a salt of thiocyanic acid as an accelerator. The thiocyanates may be metal, ammonium or amine salts and complexes of the metal salts with ammonia, amines or thiourea. Epoxides specified are the oxides of mono- or polyunsaturated hydrocarbons, epoxy ethers of mono- or polyhydric alcohols or phenols, acetals of glycidaldehyde, nitrogenous epoxides and epoxides derived from unsaturated carboxylic acids and cyanuric acid. The specified compounds reactive therewith are mono- or polyhydric alcohols or phenols, mono-, di- or polysaccharides, methylolureas, methylolmelamines, tartaric acid esters, castor oil, cyanuric acid, mono- or poly-carboxylic acids, and cyclic anhydrides. In an example (21) benzyl alcohol is reacted with phenylglycidyl ether in the presence of potassium thiocyanate.ALSO:Monoepoxides and polyepoxides are reacted with compounds containing one or more hydroxyl, mercapto, carboxyl and/or carboxylic anhydride groups in its molecule in the presence of a salt of thiocyanic acid as an accelerator. The thiocyanates may be metal, ammonium or amine salts and complexes of the metal salts with ammonia, amines or thiourea. Epoxides specified are the oxides of mono- or poly-unsaturated hydrocarbons, epoxy ethers of mono- or polyhydric alcohols or phenols, acetals of glycidaldehyde, nitrogenous epoxides and epoxides derived from unsaturated carboxylic acids and cyanuric acid. The specified compounds reactive therewith are mono- or polyhydric alcohols or phenols, mono-, di- or polysaccharides, polyvinyl alcohol, polyallyl alcohol, aminoplasts, polyhydric esters or polyesters, cyanuric acid, mercaptans, thiophenols, polymercaptans, mono- or polycarboxylic acids and cyclic anhydrides of polycarboxylic acids, or mixtures thereof.ALSO:Iron sheets are painted with clear lacquers comprising an epoxy resin, potassium thiocyanate, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, ethyl glycol, toluene and trimethylalpropane, or diethylene glycol or triethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol, and the coatings were cured at 150 DEG C.
