Abstract

1,070,292. Aerials. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. July 17, 1964, No. 29271/64. Heading H4A. In an aerial system such as a radio telescope comprising a large dish type reflector, a vertical support shaft 8 is carried on bearings in a casing 9 upon which is mounted an azimuth drive motor connected to the shaft by a pinion and ring wheel gear train. The casing has a spherical seating A, of radius R, in a main housing 10, and may be rotated thereupon for adjustment purposes by two sets of slides 3, 4 at right angles to each other. In this way, the shaft 8 may be brought into a truly vertical position should the housing 10 be tilted by, for example, subsidence of the earth. Rotation of the casing 9 in reaction to the azimuth drive may be prevented by a mechanical linkage to the housing 10 or by a magnetic lock. The actuation of the adjustment slides may be effected automatically under the control of a separate pendulum device or the slides may be dispensed with if the centre of gravity of the system is made sufficiently below the centre of the spherical seating A. In a second'embodiment, Fig..4 (not shown), the spherical seating is inverted and is located at the bottom of the casing, the adjusting slides then being arranged between the upper ends of the casing and the housing. The casing may be provided with flanges (F1) and the housing with flanges (F2) and they may be bolted together after adjustment of the slides, distance pieces (D) being interposed if required. In a third embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), an azimuth drive motor (5) is mounted on a fixed support structure on which is also mounted a cup for a spherically seated housing (15). The main shaft (1<SP>1</SP>) of the radio telescope is carried on bearings in the housing (15). A ring gear-wheel (14) surrounding and secured to the shaft (1<SP>1</SP>) meshes with a pinion (13) carried in the housing (15), said pinion being driven by the motor (5) through a universal joint shaft (12). Packing pieces (16) are placed under the motor (5) to ensure that its shaft is parallel with the main shaft (1<SP>1</SP>).
