Abstract
The invention comprises aralkyl carboranes. These compounds may have the formula R4AR5#qR, where #q is the carboranyl group -C2B10H10-, R4 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkoxy, carboxy or halogen, A is arylene, R5 is alkylene, and R is alkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy or a monovalent or divalent carboranyl ether radical, the divalent members of the latter group terminating in a radical of the formula R5AR4. The compounds are prepared by reacting an organolithium compound with a carboranyl compound having at least one labile hydrogen atom, and reacting the product with an aralkyl compound wherein the alkyl group is substituted by halogen and the aryl group may be substituted by alkyl, alkoxy or halogen. The compounds wherein R4 is carboxy may be produced from those wherein R4 is halogen by reacting with an organolithium compound to replace the halogen by lithium, reacting this product with carbon dioxide and acidifying.
