Abstract

1,070,027. Cleaning tanks. ALGONQUIN SHIPPING & TRADING Ltd. June 29, 1964 [May 4, 1964], No. 26796/64. Heading A4F. [Also in Division B7] A service unit for heating the cargo or washing the hold of a vessel carrying oil or dry bulk comprises a vertically disposed tubular structure having its upper end supported at or above deck level and its lower end 19 located at the bottom of the hold, the tubular structure having a series of wash diffusion sections 11, 12, 15, 16 spaced lengthwise along and communicating therewith, nozzles in said diffuser sections, means to feed wash water to said tubular structure and diffusion sections, heating means associated with said tubular structure comprising a steam pipe 30 extending through the structure and diffusion sections, the lower end of pipe 30 passing through the wall of the structure adjacent the lower end thereof and coiled 31 in an upward direction about the structure for at least part of the length thereof, means to feed steam to said steam pipe and a condensate return pipe 36 extending from the upper end of the said coiled portion of the steam pipe. As shown, the tubular structure comprises tubular sections 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 located between diffusion sections 11, 12, 15, 16. A mounting flange 25 is welded to the top of upper section 6, said flange 25 resting on a ring 62 which in turn rests on the top wall 45 of hatch cover 40. The cover 40 contains a service housing 41 within which the head 21 of the service unit is operatively located. Housing 41 includes a wash water compartment 42, a steam compartment 43, and a condensation compartment 44. Wash water is supplied from a main 53 through a flexible connection 59 to compartment 42 where it flows through aperture 39 into the tubular structure and exits at the diffusion nozzles. Steam is directed into compartment 43 from a steam main (not shown) where it passes through a hole in the mounting flange 25 and is guided by an inverted dish part 26 through hole 31 into steam pipe 30. In travelling through coils 31, 33, 35 the steam heats the oil and is in turn condensed. Condensate is led by pipe 36 into inverted dish portion 28 and hence into compartment 44 where it is drained by a pipe (not shown). When dry bulk is being carried the service unit is removed from the hatch cover and installed in a hollow bulkhead (Fig. 2, not shown).
