Abstract

A cellular foam product has a textured surface comprising a layer of cellular resinous foam containing the decomposition product of a chemical blowing agent and having on areas of its surface an inhibitor for said blowing agent which substantially alters its decomposition temperature, said areas being at a different level from the remaining areas of said surface. It is produced by incorporating the blowing agent in a foamable resinous composition, applying the inhibitor to portions of the surface of the compositions, and then heating the composition to a temperature sufficient to decompose the blowing agent to form a cellular layer. Typical inhibitors are organic acids such as maleic, fumaric, adipic and phthalic acids; organic acid halides containing from 2 to 20 carbon atoms; organic acid anhydrides; polyhydric aromatic alcohols and polyketones and amines, preferably 6 to 10 member rings either saturated or unsaturated, containing from 3 to 12 carbon atoms. Typical classes of blowing agents are substituted nitroso compounds, substituted hydrazides, substituted azo compounds, acid azides and guanyl compounds. The foamable composition is preferably a dispersion of resin in a medium. Specified resins are polymers of vinyl chloride-homopolymers, or copolymers or terpolymers with residues of other ethylenically unsaturated compounds. The foamable composition may be applied as a coating to a base and then may be covered with a wear layer. The inhibitor may be incorporated in an ink and printed below or above the foamable composition or even over the wear layer.ALSO:A cellular foam product has a textured surface comprising a layer of cellular resinous foam containing the decomposition product of a chemical blowing agent and having on areas of its surface an inhibitor for said blowing agent which substantially alters its decomposition temperature, said areas being at a different level from the remaining areas of said surface.
