Abstract
Foamed plastic material is obtained by heating granules of synthetic plastic material containing an expanding agent in two or three expanding steps so that the mass of granules is brought to a density which is substantially lower than the desired density of the product and then reducing the mass of the expanded granules in a subsequent interconnection step by displacing the granules relatively to one another and/or by compression so as to fill the interspaces between adjacent granules to a substantial degree, whereby the density of the coherent body is increased. Binding agents such as polyvinyl acetate dissolved in ethyl alcohol or phenol, urea, polyurethane or epoxy resins may be used, or the granules may be fused by a high-frequency current. The expanded granules may be interconnected by compression between the endless belts of the apparatus described in Division B5.
