Abstract

1,069,594. Bearings. FERRANTI Ltd. Jan. 26, 1966 [Jan. 26, 1965], No. 3334/65. Heading F2A. [Also in Division G1] A gyroscope rotor is supported on hydrodynamic air bearings formed between it and a shaft (12), Fig. 2 (not shown), and fixed thrust plates (31, 33). The thrust plates are grooved to generate the air pressure required for the bearings, and the shaft (12) has its bearing surface coated with tungsten carbide by a flameplating process to give the necessary hardness and prevent scuffing. The bearing surface of the rotor is formed by a sleeve (36) of alumina so that it will not bind to the shaft (12) during periods when the gas-bearing is not fully operative.
