Abstract
1,069,507. Jet propulsion plant. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. Feb.18, 1966, No.7370/66. Heading F1J. A central cone 21 is mounted in the exhaust passageway 13 of a gas turbine vertical lift engine by means of angularly spaced struts 22 attached at their outer ends to the outer casing 20 of the passageway. Each strut 22 has a portion 23 passing freely through the casing 20 and attached to the centre of a dished sheet metal member 24 welded to the casing 20 and having concentric corrugations 25. The struts are formed of a ceramic material, such as silicon nitride, having a very low coefficient of expansion, whilst the casing 20 is of sheet metal and tends to expand considerably in a radial direction when heated by the turbine exhaust gases. The corrugated members 24 provide a flexible connection between the respective struts and the casing 20, thus permitting such expansion.
