Abstract
1,177,080. Steam separator. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 29 Dec., 1966 [6 Jan., 1966], No. 58044/66. Heading B1T. [Also in Divisions Fl and G3] A controlled flow distribution of the fluid flowing from a duct 12 into a sudden enlargement of the cross-sectional flow area, is achieved by a device comprising an apertured structure defining a plurality of passageways, the structure being of generally circular crosssection with diameter increasing from an apex, such as cone-shaped as shown, or dome shaped, and having a first portion 18, extending from the apex and a second portion 19 extending from the first portion, the passageways of the second portion deflecting fluid flowing axially into the structure toward the apex by a minimum of at least 20‹, and the two portions each having a different value of solidity not greater than 50%. Solidity is the ratio of obstructed area to total area. The first or central portion 18 may, as shown comprise a mesh screen and the outer portion 19 a honeycomb wall of lesser solidity than the screen. Overlapping screens (22, 23) may be used for the central part and instead of a honeycomb, concentric bars carried on radial struts, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). The device (27) may be dome shaped instead of conical Fig. 7 (not shown) and consist wholly of a cascade of annular aerofoil sections. In another embodiment, Figs. 8 and 8a the device is adjustable. An apertured member (32) is rotatable on a fixed apertured member (33). Steam Separator. Incorporates such a device (17) in Fig. 1 (not shown) in the inlet and consists of a cylindrical shell (15) which houses a series of closely spaced corrugated sheets (11) round which the steam follows a serpentine path. The device is designed to give a uniform velocity profile at, or just prior to, the location of the sheets. Gas Turbine Combustion Chamber. Is similarly provided with such a device (52) located at a sudden enlargement of crosssection into the outer chamber, in place of a conventional diffuser (51), Figs. 12 to 14 (not shown) and designed to reduce the overall length of the engine. The device is stated to avoid transitory stall conditions illustrated graphically in Fig. 14.
