Abstract

A process for producing a non-woven bonded fabric comprises the steps of laying a web of fibres a proportion of which are potentially crimpable synthetic fibres of length 1/8 to 1/2 inch and having a denier between 1 and 4, and treating the web to develop crimp in the fibres to the extent of 4 to 20 crimps per centimetre and 10% to 60% crimp, thereby consolidating the web. Potentially crimpable fibres referred to are polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate. The web may include other fibres such as non crimped polyethylene terephthalate and natural or cellulosic fibres. Bonding agents include fibrids of a fibre-forming polyester, cellulosic fibres or a coagulable elastomer or polymer. The web may be formed by deposition of a slurry of the fibres together with the binder on the wire of a Fourdrinier or vat-type paper machine. Crimping may be effected by heat e.g. during calendering, or by a chemical treatment. The product may be used for heat and sound insulation wall coverings, packaging clothing fabrics and disposable napkins, or as a reinforcement in elastomeric material such as polyvinyl chloride or polyurethane to provide an imitation leather. Treatment of the fibres to develop potential crimp may involve quenching the filament immediately after the spinning process with a thin layer of liquid or an air stream, alternatively the filament may be drawn over a narrow heated surface or a tow of filaments may be crimped, heated to set the crimp, cooled and tensioned and heated again and cooled under tension.
