Abstract

<PICT:1069387/C6-C7/1> <PICT:1069387/C6-C7/2> Molten metal is degasified by sonic or ultrasonic vibrations generated by a mains frequency alternating current, the waveform of which and/or the waveform of a secondary A.C. is/are distorted in order to increase the proportion of harmonics of sonic and/or ultrasonic frequencies generated. A suitable device comprises a transformer with packs of laminations dimensioned and/or removable to produce the distorted waveform. As shown a transformer core 10 comprises three packs of rectangular ring laminations arranged with their sides 10b overlapping and wound with the primary coil 11. The secondary is formed by the molten metal in a channel 13 in a ceramic body 12. The magnetic flux in the core 10, normally 10,000 Gauss, may be increased to about 18,000 Gauss by removal of the arms 10a of the core, whereby the core is saturated and the waveform in the melt is distorted. The channel 13 connects with a cavity (15) in the bottom of a "warm-keeping" ladle Fig. 3 (not shown) having a draw-off pipe (18) for the degasified metal. The waveform distortion may alternatively be obtained by magnetically preloading the transformer core by an additional, direct current, winding.
