Abstract
A metal or ceramic component is coated with graphite particles by dispersing graphite particles of a grain size less than 10 microns in a voltaile organic solvent, spraying the solvent charged with particles of graphite in dispersed form, towards the component, in the form of droplets, producing a potential difference between the droplets and the component to cause the droplets to burst in the form of a mist, and precipitating the mist on the component. The spraying may be carried out by centrifugal force or by the use of pneumatic force. The organic solvent may have a surface tension less than 50 dynes per cm, and may be ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, butyl acetate, acetone or methyl isobutyl ketone. The component may be a pure or low-alloy uranium or ceramic nuclear fuel rod as the case of a nuclear reactor fuel.
