Abstract
1,069,160. Optical measurement. A.C. COSSER Ltd. Aug.27, 1965 [Sept.1, 1964], No.35764/64. Heading G1M. A gauge for measuring a dimension of an object 10 comprises a light sensitive device 16, scanning means 13 which when displaced by drive means coupled thereto so scans progressively across a field of view for the gauge from one extremity of the field of view to the opposite extremity thereof that light falls on the device from successive parts of the field of view, control means 21, 22 connected to the device and responsive to changes in the received light intensity as the limits of the dimension to be measured are scanned, to operate an indicator to indicate the displacement of the scanning means between scanning the limits of the said dimension. In the embodiment described the scanning means comprises a rectangular block 13 rotated by a motor 17 so that light firstly reaches the aperture 14 and photo-sensor 16 from the top edge 18 of the slab 10 and lastly from the bottom edge 19 since as the block rotates, the light is deflected different amounts. The angle subtended by the slab 10 is measured from radial graduations on a disc 21 each of which generates a pulse through pick-off 22 if light is being received by photo-sensor 16. In a modification two photosensors 23, 24 Fig. 3 (not shown) are provided, one for detecting light from the top edge and the other from the bottom edge.
